1. Vacation (Statutory vacation)

Accrual model

Monthly accrual based on length of employment

Vacation period

Vacation is accrued 01.04 – 31.03 (accrual year)

Annual quota

Typically 24 days (<1 year of employment) or 30 days (after 1 year)

New employees

New employees normally accrue 2 days per month during their first year of employment

The period, accrual, and settlement depend on the company agreement. See the functional article:

3. Other leave – Standard Finnish leave types

The Other leave module is used for longer or special leave types, which are registered in full days.

Typical Finnish leave types may include:

Leave type

Affects vacation accrual

Requires approval

Äitiysvapaa (Maternity leave)

No

Must be registered

Vanhempainvapaa (Parental leave)

No

Must be registered

Palkaton vapaa (Unpaid leave)

Yes

Yes

Hoitovapaa (Care leave)

Partially

Yes

⚠️ Maternity and parental leave normally do not affect vacation accrual in Finland. Unpaid leave may reduce vacation accrual depending on the duration.

4. Sick leave

Sick leave can be registered as daily registrations or periods. Registration in hours can be enabled if standard hours are configured.

In Finland, sick days may initially be covered by the employer, after which national sickness benefits may apply depending on regulations.

⚠️ Weekends and public holidays do not count as sick days.

5. Working hours and time registration

When selecting Finland, no time registration method is activated automatically.

The administrator must manually choose between:

  • Time registration without hour bank

  • Time registration with hour bank

⚠️ The choice depends on whether working hours are accumulated as a balance or only documented.

Important

  • The standard setup is based on common practice in Finland.

  • Companies covered by collective agreements or special arrangements must adjust the policies manually.
