Enable official holidays and create your own local holidays

Holidays in BitaBIZ

In BitaBIZ, holidays can be managed in two different ways:

  • Official holidays
(country-specific, automatically created in BitaBIZ and can be linked to the policy)

  • Local or company-specific holidays
(Holidays that cannot be selected in the policy because they are not official and therefore must be booked via group registration)

Both options are described below, and you can combine them to fit your needs.

Official holidays

BitaBIZ supports official holidays for more than 50 countries. When they are activated on the employee's policy, they are automatically added to the employees' calendars.

Vacation days, extra balance (e.g. other vacation) that fall on a holiday are not deducted from the balance if time off is taken over a holiday.

How to activate official holidays

  1. Go to Setup Admin → Modules

  2. Open or create the relevant policy

  3. Go to the Holidays tab

  4. Select the relevant country from the drop-down menu

  5. Check the holidays you want to activate

The selected holidays will then automatically appear in the calendar for employees linked to the policy.

BitaBIZ retrieves holidays from timeanddate.com, so we only support holidays that are listed there.

Local / company-specific holidays

If you need holidays that are not official (e.g. local, religious, or company-specific days off), these can be created manually.

This is done via custom registration types. Since these must be created manually, they will not appear in the holiday overview, but can be found under custom registration types.

We recommend that the registration type is created with the checkbox “Only for payroll admin”.

This ensures that employees cannot create or change holidays themselves, as these are typically managed centrally.

How to create a local holiday

  1. Give it a name (e.g. “Local holiday”)

  2. Check the box "Registration type is a day off"

  3. Check "Only for payroll admin"

How to assign a local holiday

Once the registration type is created, the holiday can be registered for employees:

This way, you can flexibly manage local holidays without affecting other employees.

Choose the correct type of holiday:

  • Use official holidays when the day is a national holiday

  • Use local holidays when the day is company- or region-specific

FAQ

What should I do if a holiday is missing from the list?

BitaBIZ retrieves holidays from timeanddate.com, so we only support holidays that are listed there.

If an official holiday is missing from the list, it is typically not an official holiday.

Company-specific holidays can be manually booked via Payroll Admin -> Group registration. This requires the day off to be created under custom registration types. Read more about how to create these here.

What is the difference between official and local holidays?

Official holidays come from timeanddate.com and are automatically added to employees' calendars when activated on the policy.
Local holidays are created manually and managed via custom registration types.

Are local holidays automatically created every year?

No. Local holidays must be created or registered manually (via group registration).

Can local holidays apply only to certain employees?

Yes. Through Payroll Admin -> Group registration, you can select which policies or departments should be manually booked with the day off.

What do we do if a holiday falls on a weekend and an “observed” replacement holiday is given?

If the replacement day is an official “observed” holiday in the country, it will appear on the holiday list in your policies. All official holidays on timeanddate.com are added to BitaBIZ.

If the replacement day is not an official holiday, it will not appear on the holiday list in your policies. Instead, you can register the day via Group registration.

It is recommended to create a separate registration type/absence type for this purpose and target it to: Payroll Admin (so your employees do not have access to the registration type).

This way, the registration type is ready and can be used whenever you need to register a replacement day off for a country, a staff group, or selected employees.

Example:
If a national holiday falls on a weekend, but the replacement day is not listed as an official “observed” holiday in BitaBIZ, the company can register the replacement day off via Group registration instead of creating it as a holiday.
